Nina Sestanovic's exhibition opening in Korcula

The ONE question I got asked every time on my exhibition openings

Why do I paint my island? - This is the most common question that I get, and I have been thinking about it a lot...

Why do I always paint abstract landscapes of the Island of Korcula and my hometown, Lumbarda

Growing up on an island brings unique freedom, felt in every step, breath, and glance at the endless sea.

The island is where nature and everyday life become one, where people are connected to the rhythm of nature, and where each change of season brings a fresh, new breath.

An island's freedom is not only physical; it's deeply emotional – the freedom to be yourself without the pressure and noise of the outside world.

On the island, life is simple yet decadent.

Space is always there, unlimited, where you can dedicate yourself to the small things that make everyday life beautiful - a peaceful walk along the shore, watching the sunrise or sunset, listening to the sounds of the sea.

Freedom on the island also means freedom of spirit because, despite the limited space, the island invites introspection and connection with oneself and nature, which is the best foundation for a sense of inner balance and happiness.

In the paintings that reflect this way of life, nature becomes a companion in growing up, and the sea, sky, and land create a harmony that strengthens the feeling of freedom.

A person who grew up on an island carries with them a strong connection to nature and an inner peace that is rarely found in busy, modern life.

The freedom I feel on the island is physical, but it is also a freedom of spirit that has grown within me through the years, leaving an indelible mark on every painting I create.

That is why I paint my island's landscapes.
